– The aim was to create a public space where the inhabitants of Delfshaven, Rotterdam can cultivate their social relationships and common traits through informal meetings, despite of their increasing differences. The programme is created around fictional characters, based on local statistics, and their ‘needs’ and ‘wishes’, using the existing library and bi-weekly market actively with an adjacent raised library garden with elements from Islamic and Dutch gardening tradition, an amphi-theatre for the local creative society to rehearse and perform, and a social venue for larger gatherings and parties.
The garden extends as a plan from the library, covering the social venue and hard surfaced market-space. Angle variations cut-outs creates the amphi-theatre and physical communication between the different functions.
