Im trying to draw a summary of the discussions I have in each EMST tutorial, hopefully so that I can use them in the tech report to document how my attitude to technology has evolved / developed. Here’s the first one…

Design Table

Using the table as a device for my project I can explore the networks, characters and processes in Boskoop. These drawings show some of the exploration of the place and then aim to describe the project through three time cycles. Lots more to experiment with designing outwards…

Developing Ideas

So leading on from the lift exhibition, I’ve decided to focus my idea on a small scale, urban, locust farm. The general themes for the project will explore, natural and artificial,  city and nature and the consumer and producer. I’m aiming to continue with the participatory exercises to develop an understanding of people’s perception of food, whilst using it as a platform to propose alternatives.

The second sheet, The Pest: A viable alternative, is unfinished. It’s simply to give an idea of how the project is progressing.

Evidence of Community Action…

Following on from yesterday’s start, I’ve been trying to work the model of Nico’s house into a drawing. I didn’t get very far before being distracted by the following…

I’ve also started another drawing, illustrating another set of characters – ‘Atelier DiFranci’ – who are a locally based artists studio. They initiated one of the first instances of ‘community action’ in response to the Stadshavens Rotterdam masterplan. The drawing is attempting to illustrate the action itself, as well as who is involved and how I – as a visitor – discovered and interpreted it. This drawing is simply a way to introduce Atelier DiFranci as characters in my ‘story’ (project). The drawing shown here is a bit bland and unsophisticated, but I imagine it becoming part of a bigger drawing about how many characters meet each other and build relationships – both before I become involved as an architect, and during the design process that will produce my final building.

Recent Investigations….

Here is some of my work from the last week or so. The first drawing is a diagram explaining the core aims of the Forty Hall Vineyard project which I am proposing to use as a hypothetical client for my project. It breaks down their aims into 4 categories 1. To make the project a viable business, 2. To give marginalised members of the community an opportunity to work in a new environment, 3. To grow organic grapes using sustainable methods and produce high-quality wine and 4. To teach people about growing local produce and how food makes it from the field to the table.

The second drawing is exploring my chosen site and its relationship to the rural and urban context it lies within. It needs annotation and some keys etc. but in the top layer I am trying to explore how the programme could sit on the site to address the issue of the abrupt boundary between the productive landscape and the sprawling urban grain.
