Today I’ve been trying to make a model as the basis of a drawing…

Nico, a real-life  ‘character’ from my site keeps his house as an open house for the collection of stories. He lives in one house within a whole area of terraced housing that is scheduled for demolition under the Stadshavens Rotterdam masterplan. In the meantime, he hosts artists, storytellers, musicians, poets, theatre groups and dramatists, as well as showing films in short evening sessions that are often accompanied by a shared meal. Together, they produce and collect stories about a range of topics including Heijplaat and the imminent change it faces.

I didn’t know how to draw that – at least not quickly – and so I’ve made a model that attempts to communicate the life behind the condemned facade and the spill-over of those collected stories into the area around Nico’s Living Room Theatre…

I’ll work this up in Illustrator to annotate things and say a bit more about Nico. This model will form part of both a drawing about Nico as a character and his ‘workshop’ as a place, and also to a ‘process’ drawing of how various community actions such as this are translated into a design process for a new building – although precisely what that building is remains pretty open.
